Jennifer's First Prayers

Jennifer had a turbulent relationship with God during her teen years.

As a child, she remembers going to a Christian Sunday school at least one time. She went to a church on Easter Sunday with her mom and brother at least one time. That was the extent of her religious upbringing. Her mother believes in God. Her father believes only in science. As a kid, her family celebrated Christmas and she loved the nativity scene her mother had. She loved the little baby Jesus and all the barn animals. They celebrated Easter with the Easter bunny.

Even though Jennifer only remembers going to Sunday school once or twice, it made an impression on her. She received a Good News bible for children. The stories fascinated her. She remembers the teacher telling her that Jesus loves her and they sang a song about it. Her whole body was filled with warmth and she can still remember that feeling today. The warm fuzzy of knowing that Jesus loves her would ultimately save her life.

Jennifer wrote her first prayers in her diary in December of 1979.

"Today I talked to God. I asked him about the world's future. He said He would tell me tonight. He told me by candlelight. (prayer I made up.)"

Okay, so she needed practice. Her prayer was sort of a question/rhyme. Jennifer loved to rhyme.
Next she wrote a prayer for daytime and a prayer for nighttime.

"Thank you Jesus Lord for this day, as happy as it should stay."

"(one for night) Thank Jesus Lord for this night, as happy as He is bright."

Lyrics to the song Jennifer learned in Sunday School
Jesus loves me! This I know,
For the Bible tells me so;
Little ones to Him belong,
They are weak but He is strong.
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
The Bible tells me so.
Jesus loves me! He who died,
Heaven's gate to open wide;
He will wash away my sin,
Let His little child come in.
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
The Bible tells me so.
Jesus loves me! loves me still,
When I'm very weak and ill;
From His shining throne on high,
Comes to watch me where I lie.
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
The Bible tells me so.
Jesus loves me! He will stay,
Close beside me all the way;
He's prepared a home for me,
And some day His face I'll see.
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
The Bible tells me so.
